Reflections Art Program - Deadline Next Week

Students, it's time to Start the Art! Continue City's tradition of great representation at this statewide art competition and program designed to remind us about the importance of the arts, in our schools and in our lives! We announced the theme in August, (Beauty Is...) but it's time to begin your Reflections Art projects in earnest - the deadline is the last day of school before Christmas break! (December 18.) Download the Rules and Entry Form PDF listed below and make sure your work meets all the rules. And check with your TEACHERS to see if extra credit is available for your submission.
This years' judges have been arranged for the following categories: Literature, Visual Art, Photography, and Music Composition. We will only open a Video category if at least three people commit to preparing work by the deadline.

Submissions must be received at the office no later than end of school day Dec. 18, with three attached and completed copies of your entry form, and in the case of photos or visual art, a cardboard & tape "portfolio" to protect your work. Literature and Music submissions may be submitted in a large envelope/and or folder. AN ARTIST STATEMENT must accompany the work, as this year the State of Michigan competition will not accept entries without one.
Click here to download the complete info package: Download file

Please read the entire packet. If you have questions, you may search past Reflections information at http://www.cityptsa.com/NEWS/reflections. If you still have questions, email katem@what-if.com.

Best wishes and have fun!

Calling all artsy students...it's time to let your talent shine! The PTSA's Reflections Art program is your opportunity to paint, write, photograph, choreograph, compose music or produce a film or video in response to this year's theme of "Wow." New this year is the requirement that EACH entry is accompanied by an "Artist's Statement" that helps judges understand what inspired your work and how it relates to the WOW theme. Winning entries in each category will be submitted to the Michigan State competition and the artists will have a chance to have their work reviewed at the National level. In addition to local recognition and a record of your accomplishment on your file, one entrant from City will be chosen for the Outstanding Entry Award for $100 cash prize. Start the art this weekend and WOW us!
To get started, download the 2008 rules and entry form. Finish your piece according to the rules, attach the form in triplicate, and be sure to include your Artist's Statement. Bring your work to the Office at 2 p.m. December 15 for submission. Ask your teachers in related subjects for extra credit and we'll confirm receipt of your entry!

STUDENTS, START THE ART with REFLECTIONS

The Reflections Competition is back for 2008-2009! This year's theme to which artists who paint, write, draw, choreograph, compose, make videos or take pictures respond is:
WOW...

So, what makes you say wow? What can you create that will make the Reflections judges think "Wow!" for this year?

PARENTS -- Encourage your children to CREATE an original photograph, artwork, literature, musical composition, dance choreography or film/video production inspired by this year's theme: "WOW..."

STUDENTS -- Read the rules for your category of choice online, download the submission form, and START YOUR ART for submission BY DEC. 08. Nominate yourself as well using the ballots in the office (see the post about the Arts Agent lottery.) All grades are welcome. Juniors and Seniors, remember that this is an opportunity to DISTINGUISH yourself in your field for college applications.

TEACHERS -- Encourage your students to express their talents by offering extra credit, if appropriate to your curriculum, or extra support developing their response to the theme.

PARTICIPATE: By supporting the REFLECTIONS celebration, you are not only celebrating creativity, diversity and talent. You are also communicating to our legislatures that the Arts enhance learning and promote student achievement. Did you know that studies show a positive correlation between enrollment in arts courses and SAT math and verbal scores?

To read NEW RULES FOR 2008-2009, visit the REFLECTIONS "download rules" submenu on the News Sidebar.

Nominate Your Artsy Pals and Win Holiday Cash!

To commemorate National Start the Art Week and kick off the 2008-2009 Reflections Art Competition, we're giving all City students a chance to win cash while helping City's talent shine. Even if you're not an artist, YOU can be an "Arts Agent." Here's how:
1. Think of someone you know (yourself included) who: dances, draws, writes, composes music, makes videos or takes photographs. You may choose multiple people.
2. Fill out a ballot (available at the office counter starting Oct. 6) to nominate yourself or your friend(s) as "Most Likely To Art." Make sure YOUR email and THE ARTIST'S email is on the ballot.
3. Make sure the nominee SUBMITS their entry to the Reflections program by Dec.8. RULES FOR SUBMISSIONS ARE AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD HERE. All submissions are collected in a large box in the office between DEC. 1 AND DEC. 8 only.
4. YOUR name as the nominator will be entered in the "agent" lottery for a cash prize of $50, which will be drawn and awarded at the holiday break assembly. Even if you nominate yourself, you will be eligible for the prize drawing, provided your entry is submitted by the deadline and meets all the division rules.

BUT WAIT...There's more. You'll have a SECOND chance to win a $50 agent award if the person you nominated is selected by the Reflections Community judging panel for the new OUTSTANDING ENTRANT award, which is a $100 additional award given to ONE of all the artists who are selected for submission to the STATE Reflections competition. In the event that several people have nominated the same artist, a drawing will be held to determine the winner.

R E F L E C T I O N S News and 2nd Chance Recall in 4 Categories!

The Reflections Program is happy to announce it has received outstanding submissions in the Literature and Music Composition categories, which are now in the judging process. A big THANK YOU to the talented students and the teachers who supported them!

The program did not, however, receive any submissions in the following categories: VISUAL ART, PHOTOGRAPHY, FILM/VIDEO and DANCE. Yet we know that City is rife with talent in these arts, and as busy as you've been, you now have TWO WEEKS FREE to express yourself. For this reason, and with the grace of our judges, we are extending a SECOND CHANCE CALL FOR ENTRIES in these categories, with very specific submission rules to accommodate the lack of preparation time for judges.

NEW DEADLINE: January 8th, 2 p.m. Delivered TO THE FILE BOX IN THE OFFICE

NEW IDENTIFICATION REQUIREMENT: Each entry must now use your STUDENT ID NUMBER on materials for quick cross-referencing so that we can get the material to the judges.

NEW MULTIPLES RULE: MUST SUBMIT THREE COPIES: Three signed copies of the ENTRY FORM with your STUDENT NUMBER on it in a prominent location. We will also need THREE COPIES OF DVDs for the FILM category and DANCE category, with only your STUDENT NUMBER identifying it. We do NOT need multiple copies of original artwork or photography.

- Happy holidays, and have an ARTFUL reprieve : )
